Customs

  • People greet each other by shaking their right hands or, when meeting somebody of higher rank, the person will support the higher ranked person’s right arm with their left arm, and they usually say hello to one another

  • A polite phrase to say when you are greeting someone is Ow di bodi? (in Kiro language), which means How are you?, and kɔmɔt na rod (in Kiro language), which means excuse me, is also polite

  • It isn’t proper for a woman to whistle, and people don’t like pointing the soles of their feet at other people

  • Kiro is spoken in this country, and Mende (spoken in the southern and some eastern parts of Sierra Leone) and Temne (spoken in the northern part of Sierra Leone) are also spoken in this country
